OBJECTIVE

Daido Moriyama’s work captures the street as sensation rather than documentation. A monograph about his practice cannot rely on clarity or order without betraying what the work actually is. This project explores how a book can reflect the instability, density, and immediacy found in his photography. The goal is to create an editorial system that feels immersive and slightly disorienting, allowing meaning to emerge through experience rather than explanation. The design resists comfort, encouraging the reader to engage with the work over time rather than move through it quickly.

Approach

The layout draws from Moriyama’s Provoke book, embracing experimentation, color, contrast, and disruption. Typography challenges readability, and compositions resist predictable structure while still maintaining enough control to hold together. Grain, blur, and imperfection are used with intention, supporting the imagery rather than following the grid. Structure exists only to give tension to the disorder. Memories of Matsuko (2006) shares the same emotional logic, building meaning through fragmentation and layering, where experiences accumulate into something complex and the difficulty of the journey becomes part of what the work is about.
